Project Overview
Martin took on the challenge of a self-build project and after more than two years of research chose a Scandinavian Log House to build on the plot of land he purchased in Powys, North Wales. He undertook the vast majority
of the project on his own whilst living on site over a twelve month period.
The Log House occupies over 1800 square feet on two floors with fantastic balconies with views across fields and
a canal. One of the prime goals was to create an energy efficient home and to take advantage of the outstanding insulation properties of the Log House. Another primary goal was to have an integrated control system that would not only control the heating, but also the solar system for the hot water, the full house heat recovery ventilation system, security lighting and even the filter system for his fish pond.
The Solution
When he took on his self build project Martin wanted a system that could accurately and efficiently control his heating and hot water needs as well as ventilation and other functions in the house. MORE>

Series 8 Heaters
A number of Series 8 panel heaters were chosen from the extensive range available from NOBO Heating. The decision was made based on both the SAP calculations and Part L of the building regulations, which his building consultant had provided as well as aesthetics taking into account where he wanted the heaters to be positioned in the home. Orion 700
The Orion 700 has been programmed to control the different rooms in the house by creating profiles for each room which are termed as ‘zones’ by the Orion 700. This allows the user to set specific profiles for the bathrooms, bedrooms, lounge and study – All in all there have been six individual zones created out of a possible 100! MORE>
Solar Power Water Heating
Martin was determined to introduce some renewable energy supply into the building in order to complete the energy efficiency operation and so he installed solar panels to the roof which generate heat for the hot water system coupled with an electric immersion heater when needed.
Martin commented:
‘The Orion 700 has been a superb compliment to my self-build project and one which really satisfies all the requirements I had as a self builder, I control all the power into the house and it delivers the most efficient energy usage ever in a home I have owned; 70% of the hot water heating is supplied by the solar panels’
Bathroom Heaters
The log cabin has spacious bathrooms and the NOBO Heating Executive Towel Rails were chosen and incorporated into the overall design of the bathroom areas – A white model for the ground floor bathroom and a chrome version for the family bathroom – both of which are controlled as part of the zone profiles by the Orion 700.
Summary
